Why sheep? ... the Bible tells us often that we are sheep ... (sheep) are not strong and independent creatures, not proud hunters or fierce predators. They're actually kind of pathetic, entirely dependent upon a shepherd for at least three reasons...
... because sheep are dumb
... they are directionless
... they are also defenseless
(observations on Psalm 23 from Tim Challies, a Christian book reviewer and co-founder of Cruciform Press)
So, when God says that we are sheep who need a shepherd, he doesn't mean it as a compliment. It is just a very realistic assessment of who we are and what we need. To say that God is our shepherd and we are sheep is to humble ourselves (admitting what is true about us) and to elevate God (declaring what is true of him.
In this class, we will use Psalm 23 and other Scriptures to explore what this means to have the Lord as our Shepherd - His provision, direction, and protection. We will explore:
- A portrait of God: The Shepherd Metaphor
- Jesus as Shepherd
- Rest and Renewal: Taking time alone with God
- Listening & Responding to God: The satisfaction of God's presence
Classes are held on Sunday mornings at 9:00am in Room 17.
